Democratic forms of government first came into being in America and France in the late 1700’s during a time in history when common people had enough of the excesses of aristocratic rule which was absolute, autocratic, and often insensitive to the needs of common people.   With the overthrow of the aristocracy in multiple countries, brand new systems of government called democracies were constructed with the overriding goal of preventing too much power being concentrated in the hands of one person or family.  This is the reason that all democracies have limits on the power of the president or prime minister, two houses of congress or parliament rather than one, and system of checks and balances on all major decisions.  

The term “checks and balances” reflects a positive spin on democracies.  It could also be called “divided and overlapping responsibilities”. Modern social and organizational psychologists have written extensively about the effects of diffusion of responsibility which are to veer toward more risky decisions since no one person is solely accountable.  Yet, this structure was originally designed to deter autocratic rule, and has been generally effective in doing so. Yet, it is also inherently messy as there are so many stakeholders with different stakes to protect and all have a role in the decision.  Change, sometimes called progress, proceeds at a slow pace with many fits and starts, compromises and reversals.  It often seems that we move two steps forward and then one step back.  This is the nature of any system with divided and overlapping roles of governance.  Over the past quarter century, public frustration with slogging through a slow and messy political process has given rise to a desire among many for a strong leader with the power to cut through the bull and lead the country forcefully in one direction.  But, leading forcefully in one direction inevitably means that the interests of other groups are overridden, and autocratic rule is exactly what democratic systems were built to prevent.

As a result of these safeguards, would-be strong-men can not rise in a democratic nation unless they are successful in dismantling its most important features.  Most importantly, this includes the power of the legislative branch to provide oversight functions on the executive, the independence of the judicial branch to review the legality of executive decisions, and freedom of the press to investigate and report on all branches.  History shows the playbook leading to autocratic power progresses a well-worn path of manufacturing or exacerbating fear from an existential threat to the people’s way of life; setting oneself up as the only person who can address it by seeding doubt on the believability of intellectuals such as scientists and other experts;  restricting the press from freely criticizing the leader, stacking the courts with party loyalists, and declaring a national emergency granting the leader special powers, thus weakening or possibly even disbanding the legislative branch.  In many cases, a war is declared to rally the people and give the leader military as well as political power, sometimes using the military to crush internal dissension.  But, it always begins with weakening the system of checks and balances on the leaders power that paves the way for autocratic rule.

Even with a robust system of checks and balances, the U.S. presidency is clearly an immensely powerful position.  For President Narcissus, however, power is not the end game.  The goal is self-glorification.  This can come in many forms – artistic, athletic, or even scientific accomplishment, with awards ranging from Time Magazines Man of the Year to the Noble Prize for curing Coronavirus – complete with adoring crowds.  But, even this view of narcissism is misleading.  The narcissist does not seek adoration based on some specific accomplishment that he is willing to work long and hard to obtain, but rather expects adulation in all things whether merited or not.  He views himself as naturally superior to all others, endowed with special talents and gifts even in the absence of any verifiable accomplishments.  Only people he perceives as having similar value are worthy of his company and respect (such as Putin and Kim Jon), and he surrounds himself with things of the highest status (such as his own plane, tower, and hotel).  Every idea, every decision, and every item a narcissist produces is believed by him to be the best in history – something never before seen!  From his perspective, any criticism is perceived as fake or unjust.  Consequently, push back on President Narcissus’s decisions have been framed either as presidential abuse or the actions of the deep state – a dark cabal of liberal activists conspiring to subverting the will of the duly elected President –  but the so-called deep state is really nothing more than the system of checks and balances operating through a myriad of unknown civil servants doing the jobs they were hired to do under the Constitution.

While President Narcissus’s psychological motivation may be to obtain self-glorification and not necessarily autocratic political  power, the effects of his behavior are exactly along the path described above:  Generate fear from an existential threat such as immigration; attacking the credibility of intelligence experts and public health scientists who disagree with him about the pandemic,  casting doubt on the credibility of the free press by calling them fake news and enemies of the people, stacking the federal courts  with party loyalists, and declaring a national emergency to deal with the threat of illegal immigration to our way of life.  While he may not seek absolute power as his personal end game, by weakening the various checks and balances on his position he is, in effect, paving the road for a future would-be strong man to take over.   One motivated not only by self-glorification, but by raw power.   And, who knows what political philosophy that person will ride.  It would be the irony of ironies if President Narcissus’s legacy is to leave a weakened democracy ripe for take-over by a socialist authoritarian president in the vein of Fidel Castro.
